The alarming increase of fungal resistance to Azole class antimycotics is of similar concern as the growing bacterial resistance to antibiotics, while the toxicity of Amphotericin-B treatment could be compared with the dramatic side effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy in cancer patients. Better treatment options are not only desired, they are of vital importance now.
A NEW SOLUTION
Together with the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of Siena University, Bakker Medical has succeeded in developing an entirely new generation of molecules with above average antifungal efficacy and complete absence of Azole class drug resistance. Considering the often lethal incidence of invasive mycosis, Bakker Medical SRL hopes to contribute to the quality of life and save the lives of millions of patients worldwide.
PATENTED UP TO 2037
Bakker Medical SRL owns the sole, worldwide exclusive commercial rights of the patented antimycotic platform under development. The first generations of molecules are patented worldwide and these patents only expire in 2032. In June 2013 a new patent for improved second generation of molecules was filed, extending patent protection up to 2037, with several new patents in the process to be filed.
A NEW PLATFORM
Bakker Medical does not merely develop a single molecule, but an entire new technology platform consisting of several generations of molecules and all related know-how, such as the optimal synthesis processes, mechanisms of action, customised computational models, efficacy, metabolism and toxicity relationships between the different molecules etc.
UNDERSTANDING FUNGI, CANCER AND HIV
Fungi are opportunistic microorganisms that are present everywhere around us.
They share our living space. Our immune system is perfectly capable of preventing them of invading our body.
Problems do however arise in patients with a compromised immune system, such as is the case with cancer and HIV-AIDS.
